There's nothing quite like a thick slab of Irish soda bread slathered with butter—be it St. Patrick's Day or just any old day.

You will need:

Bread flour

1 double acting bakery powder

1 salt

3/4 baking soda

2 buttermilk

flour sifter

greased baking sheet

a baking rack

dried fruit, nuts or seeds

Tip: When a knife struck into the middle of the loaf comes out cleanly, the bread is done.
